WREN — Wren High School’s Alive at 25 program has been steadily growing, and students are required to attend at least once in order to have a parking pass for next year.

Now teachers and parents want to take it a step further. Wren High will host a seminar on Tuesday, April 20 at 6 p.m., and a representative from the National Safety Council will talk to parents about alcohol and drug awareness.

“Wren High School … has been extremely proactive with wanting to educate their young adults,” said National Safety Council Executive Director Brooke Russell. “What they’re wanting to do now is take a step in the next direction, which is also educating the parents.”

The presentation will cover alcohol trends and awareness of some state laws. Russell says many parents may not be aware of some of the consequences of having their teenage children attending a party where alcohol is served. Students could risk losing scholarship money, and adults can be held liable if they’re serving alcohol at a party in which minors are present.

“It’s all in the hopes of being proactive,” Russell said.

Wren High parent Julie Wilson says the presentation will be a great enhancement to the Alive at 25 program.

“Alive at 25 was a driving enhancement, and with this we want to take it to the next step,” Wilson says. “Because at times, I think we believe that we live in a bedroom community where we are a little isolated and a little protected, when in reality we’re not. Our kids get into the same drugs and are involved in the same bad decisions that inner-city schools make.”

Parents and teens alike will be reminded of some of the consequences when minors are involved with alcohol.

“It’s also to educate the parents that if you have alcohol in your house, and kids come over and get into it, you can be held responsible,” she said.
