“They just feel special, because it’s something new for them,” Tollison said.
Sixth grader Emma Windsor said she was excited about the new classrooms.
“They’re a lot bigger than the old ones,” she said as she used her new locker.
“It’s been great,” Wren Middle Principal Kathy Fulbright said Wednesday morning, as the sixth graders prepared for class on their first day in the new addition. The sixth graders didn’t have their own lockers before moving into the new classroom.
“I think they’re more excited about the lockers than anything else,” Fulbright said.
Both Palmetto and Wren middle schools have recently added 10 classrooms.
The additions are part of Anderson School District One’s $85.75 million construction project, which was approved in a referendum in March 2008.
Palmetto Middle School seventh graders moved into their new classrooms on Tuesday, and Wren Middle School sixth graders moved into their new classrooms on Wednesday.
Wren Middle Assistant Principal Charles Edmondson said construction was finished in October, and teachers began moving some items in November.
Most of the work to move their items to the new classrooms took place the week before Christmas.
Three of the 10 former sixth grade classrooms are now being used as computer labs. Three of the other old classrooms will be filled when the school stops utilizing three portable classrooms.
One of the portable classrooms is used for in-school suspension, another one is an activity room, and another is used for Wren Middle’s strings class, Edmondson said.
Open houses
Both Wren and Palmetto Middle schools will be able to show off their new classrooms to the community during open houses.
Wren Middle’s open house will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Palmetto Middle’s will be from 3:15-4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15.
