Whether Wren High School is preparing for the annual Miss Wrenicycle pageant, or the band is preparing for its next tournament, Pace is likely to be seen working tirelessly behind the scenes.
“Year round, it’s probably a 50-hour work week,” says Pace, who’s in his first year as Booster Club president.
It’s hard to imagine all the work that goes into the booster club unless you’re actively involved, Pace said.
“During marching season, I get up at 3 or 3:30, I’m out there until 4, and I stay there until my kids get there at 7, and then it’s every Saturday for competitions, and then I cut the grass two days a week … all kinds of stuff like that goes on,” he says.
He and his wife Joyce have two children who attend Wren — Candace is a senior and Eddie is a freshman. It would be hard to find time to spend with his family, but he gets to spend time with his them while he volunteers for the booster club.
“That’s the reason I do it — my kids are in band,” he said. “That’s the reason I enjoy doing it. But it’s a lot of hours involved. I work a 40-hour-a-week job, plus I do that.”
The task of being booster club president can be challenging, but Pace says it’s definitely worth his time.
“It gets tiring at times, it gets frustrating at times, but you take the good with the bad,” he says. “This is my first year working in Miss Wrenicycle, and it was a challenge. But we turned out with a good pageant, and it turned out real well.”
