WREN — The Wren Middle School Hurricanes boys basketball team is being coached again this year by Bobby Rollins with Melissa Whittaker as his assistant.

There are many new faces on the boys Hurricane team as only three players returned from last year.

Returning eighth graders are Nicholas Cox, Harrison Hix, and Austin Knight.

Joining them as first year eighth grade players are Griffin Connor, Tyler Harrison and A.J. Phelps.

Seventh graders on the team are Logan Bostic, Jayland Bradley, Gunnar Brown, Cole Davis, Sam Jacques, Nolan Lennon and Noah Upton.

The Gettys Breakers were ready to host the Hurricanes, as Wren beat Gettys in both games between the two schools last year.

The Breakers had four points on the board quickly, and Wren was not able to add anything to the scoreboard until 2:17 in the first period when Harrison Hix hit his first shot.

Wren turned the ball over and Gettys capitalized on it by hitting a three pointer. Nicholas Cox added two for Wren, but it wasn’t enough, and with time buzzing to end the first period, Gettys puts up an outside shot for three. Gettys 12, Wren 8.

In the second period A.J. Phelps came onto the court for Wren, and he was able to add a few points for the Hurricanes.

Gettys was still strong, scoring 14 in the second period and led 26-17 at halftime.

Wren quickly added five points in the third period, so Gettys to call a time out.

Gettys was up only by six points with 3:56 in the third, but answered those five Wren points with 11 of their own, and the third period ended with Gettys up 39-26.

With 4:17 in the final period, five new Breakers players came onto the court, and they were up 44 to 26.

Harrison Hix and Austin Knight each scored for the Hurricanes, bringing the score to Gettys 44, Wren 31, but that was not nearly enough.

Wren ended up falling 55-35.

Harrison Hix finished with nine points, Nicholas Cox had seven, AJ Phelps and Jayland Bradley each had six for the Hurricanes.
