Last year, the girls team won the region title, and two players made it to the state playoffs.
“It was a wonderful season,” he says.
He also hopes the new tennis camp for first through sixth graders will continue to grow and develop more talent in the years to come.
The camp went from Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m.-noon.
“This is my first experience with the camp,” he said, watching as some of the Wren High tennis players coached the young aspiring athletes.
Brocket and former professional tennis player Shaun Beckish were the camp’s main coaches, but they also received plenty of help from Wren High players.
“My players are wonderful,” Brocket said. “If they can, they’ll come.”
Last year was the first time Wren hosted the camp, so it’s still in the beginning stages. Eighteen signed up for the camp early in the week, and Brocket says he would like to see the tennis camp grow, and become similar to the Hurricanes Future Stars Basketball Camp — a program that’s been ongoing for more than 20 years.
The basketball camp has had a vital role in producing solid high school athletes, said basketball Coach Fran Campbell.
That’s the type of camp Beckish says she hopes will develop and continue to gain interest.
“We’re hoping to spark more interest in the sport and make it more competitive,” she said.
Brocket said that three families have produced some of his top tennis players, which include: Katherine and Ashton Lee, Kerry and Mairin Cotter, and Alexa and Albert Nardone. Some of the players started as middle school students.
Tryouts for middle school students wanting to make the high school team are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
