Most of the days these past two weeks students have been practicing from 8 a.m.-9 p.m., and they avoid dehydration by taking water breaks every 15-20 minutes and regular breaks every hour, said Band Director Bruce Caldwell. If it gets too hot, they end practice early.
Caldwell is now into his 33rd year directing the band, and continues to look forward to the summer camp every year, he says.
“They volunteer to do this,” he says, adding that band is not something that’s required for graduation, but an extracurricular activity that almost one out of 10 high school students choose to do every year. “They do a great job.”
This year’s show will be entitled “Quidam,” based on Cirque du Soleil, a circus-styled, award-winning company that tours the world with its acrobats and performers. The arrangements were written by Jay Dawson of Nashville, Tenn.
Wren’s contest season begins on Sept. 26 at Boiling Springs and will have five more contests during October.
The band will also be marching in Disney World on March 19. Caldwell said this will be the band’s seventh trip there, but the first one in three years
