California will play Illinois 9 a.m. Friday morning on Field One of the J.B. “Red” Owens Recreation Complex. Illinois was 0-1 going into Thursday night’s game against Louisiana.
Florida, 0-1 in the United State Pool, faces Pennsylvania (1-0) at 7 p.m., Friday on Field One of the Owens Complex.
In the bottom of the first inning, James Brady opened with a single for California. Brady advanced to second on a fielding error. Dustin Kahle was hit by a pitch, giving the team from Thousand Oaks, Calif., men on first and second with no outs.
The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Toczynski singled into left field, and tried to stretch his hit into a double, but he was thrown out at second base. But the play at second base gave Kahle and Brady time to come across the plate for what turned out to be the only two runs of the game.
Florida had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the top of the second inning. Michael Battoglia reached on a fielder’s choice play, then was advanced to second base by a single by Brandon Overstreet. But the U.S. Southeast representative were unable to advance the runners, and ended the inning with both men still on base.
California came close to scoring again in the bottom of the second Tim Ginther got on base via a walk, then advanced to second on a ground-out. A single by John Travnick put Ginther on third base. After a pop fly out near second base, Ginther tried to score, but was thrown out at home plate, ending the inning.
California loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but once again came away with no runs. James Brady opened the inning with a single, but he was picked off with a throw from Florida pitcher David Pooler to first-baseman Cory Shaver.
With two outs, Danny Leon singled. Matt Tocynski walked and Nick Schmidt reached base by error to load the bases. But Thousand Oaks was unable to sustain the ralley, ending the inning with the bases still loaded.
Florida was unable to get another runner as far as second base in the remaining innings.
Pooler pitched a complete game, giving up two runs in the loss. Karp picked up the win with a complete game for Thousand Oaks.
