Mexico 3, Guam 2

EASLEY — Mexico defeated Guam 3-2 Wednesday afternoon in a game that saw Guam out hit Mexico 8-3, but commit six fielding errors by the Asia-Pacific representatives evened things out. Two of Mexico’s three runs were unearned.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Mexico’s Brian Ayala reached on an error, then later was driven in by a Emilio Snachez single.

Guam’s run came when Nathan Lujan was walked, then stole second. He was knocked in by a Shon Muna single.

Mexico took a 2-1 lead in the second. Francisco Martinez reached base on a fielding error and advanced to second on a sacrifice play. Martinez advanced to third when Ayala reached first on a fielding error. Both runners advanced on another fielding error, leaving Mexico with men on second and third. Martin score when Ayala got caught in a run-down play.

Guam came back and tied the game 2-2 in the third. Roland Cruz singled and stole second base. He scored on a single by Shon Muna.

In the seventh inning. Mexico’s Jorge Soto was walked, and moved to second base on a sacrifice play. Later in the inning, Eliodoro Valesio knocked Soto in for the winning run.

Mexico, 1-0 in the International Pool, next plays the Dominican Republic 4 p.m. Friday on Field One. Guam plays Germany 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
