Wren Middle boys, girls basketball teams defeat Edwards

WREN — Both the girls and boys Wren Middle School basketball teams won revenge victories at home against Edwards Middle School on Monday.

GIRLS

Edwards beat Wren the first time these two teams met, with one of Edwards players, Carley Hoover, scoring 32. The final score of that game was Edwards 50, Wren 39.

This game was well played during the first period and ended with Wren ahead 13-9.

The second period of play ended with Wren causing a foul with no time left on the clock, and Edwards got their first chance to shoot some free throws.

Wren led 22-19 at halftime. In the third period, Wren turned on the heat, scoring 13 points and ended that period ahead 35-30.

Janie Rice fouled out in the fourth period with 2:07 remaining, providing two points for the team total.

But that didn’t put a damper on Wren's defense. Seventh grader Allie Wagner stepped up her game and earned the Lady ’Canes first double double of the season, with 12 rebounds and 10 points.

Her efforts lifted Wren over Edwards 44-32, improving Wren's streak to four games in a row, with their record now 6-5 on the year. Addie Merritt contributed 18 points, Clancy Crawford 5, Cayla Smith 4, Asheligh Martin 3 and Hannah Richey scored 1 point.

BOYS

When Coach Bobby Rollins’ Hurricanes played against the Edwards Panthers the first time, Wren left Central with its first loss, falling 38-32.

The Wren Hurricanes held Edwards scoreless until 2:32 remained in the first period. Eighth grader Dalton Freeman hit three shots, including two 3-pointers, giving Wren all eight points of the period.

Wren ended the quarter on top, 8-3. Edwards kicked up the heat offensively during the second period, scoring 10 points and defensively allowing Wren only three points, holding Wren scoreless until 3:29 in the second period.

Eighth grader Cam Gilreath broke open the basket finally scoring for the Canes on a free throw. Edwards headed to the locker room at halftime ahead 11-13. During the third period the lead was tied early at 15 each, with Wren adding twelve points to Edwards fourteen. Edwards the third period with a 27-23 lead.

Jordan Phillips quickly added five points into the start of the fourth period, including a three-point play that put Wren ahead 28-27.

Edwards was only able to score once during the final six minutes of play, and that wasn’t nearly enough.

Wren was victorious beating Edwards this time 32-29. Jordan Phillips ended the night with seventeen points, hitting eight of nine free throws. Dalton Freeman finished with 10 points, Cam Gilreath had three and Adrian Rogers added two.

With this win, the Hurricanes improve their record to 8-3.
