Rain delays were the story of the weekend in the AAAA Region one baseball playoffs, but Wren managed to survive and keep its successful season alive.

After picking up a crucial 4-1 win over Dorman in game one, Wren traveled to Northwestern on Saturday where the team lost a heartbreaker by a score of 7-6. Head Coach Randy Thompson says his team will have to fight through fatigue to keep the season alive in the double elimination playoffs.

“The biggest thing (the rain delay) does is just create a lot of games,” said Thompson. “We’ll be playing our third game in four days, and if we win that one, we will have to turn around and play a game on Wednesday.”

Thompson says the 17-9 Hurricanes will be seeking to continue its season in the Monday game.

“I don’t know how much the weather affected us,” said Thompson. “It may have had something to do with it, but I think our kids were ready to play and we just lost to a good team Saturday. Hopefully we’ll get another shot at them (Northwestern).”

As Wren finished the season strong, Thompson says he has been encouraged to see the way his player have responded to adversity.

“We lost a couple of games early in the region that really hurt us,” said Thompson. “The Thing I’m proud of this group most about is they haven’t let some of the bad things that have happened to them keep them down.”

Thompson says part of the learning process for this team has been to keep from making the same mistake twice.

“The biggest compliment I can give this team is that they learn from their mistakes and they don’t continue to make the same mistakes over and over,” said Thompson. “A lot of times that is difficult to do with high school kids.”

While the Hurricanes may have seen a rocky start, Thompson says they are miles away from where they used to be.

“We’ve gotten better in every aspect of the game, and that is the goal of every coach. You want to be better on the last day than you were on the first day,” he said. “No matter what happens the rest of the way, we can say that we’ve gotten better.”

Thompson says his team will need to play good defense in order to advance.

“We’ve always been a team that has stressed pitching and defense,” said Thompson. “We’re pretty limited right now with our pitching, and we’ve got to have some solid performances out of some guys on Monday. We’ve just got to figure out a way to stay in it.”

A little luck would never hurt either.

“There’s a lot of luck involved,” said Thompson. “Things have to happen for you.”

Wren took on Dorman at 6 p.m. on Monday. Results were not available at press time.
